The Horace Orr American Legion Post 29 in Marietta, the largest in Georgia, is sponsoring its seventh annual Veterans Memorial 5K Run and Military Appreciation Celebration on Saturday, November 13 on the Marietta Square. The proceeds from this event support the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation, the Shepherds Men Share Military Initiative and the Service Office of Post 29.

Registration and check-in will open at 6:00 am. The race time is 7:30 am and an awards presentation is slated for 9:30 am. There’s a 1k and 5k “Tot Trot,” a wheelchair division, strollers are welcome and it’s a “dog friendly event,” according to Race Committee Chairman Tom Bell.

There is a potential flyover by Black Hawk helicopters from the Georgia National Guard to start the race, pending Federal Aviation Commission approval. There will also be a live feed from El Paso, Texas, where Georgia National Guard troops stationed at the border will be challenging and racing their comrades stationed in Georgia.

Following the race there will be a Military Appreciation Celebration from 10:30/11:00 am to 12:30 pm in Glover Park on the square. This Celebration features speakers, guests and a free concert from the Georgia Symphony Brass Ensemble and Chorus.

Why do all of this? Race Committee Chairman Bell says, “The pressing financial needs of the charities supported by American Legion Post 29 still exist, and we are committed to supporting these charities. This race supports the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation, the Shepherds Men Share Military Initiative and the Service Office of Post 29 that assists and works with needy veterans. The Legion has awarded over $435,000 in the past six 5k years to our veterans’ charities, and we will be making donations to these charities again. Our goal is to raise over $110,000 this year.”

If you can’t register in person for the 5k at the Legion headquarters on Gresham Avenue in Marietta, register by logging on to www.active.com or www.post29marietta.org/veterans-memorial-5k-race-2/
