A major solar power installation is coming to Lee County – and when completed it will be the largest in the Southeast.  The 3,000 acre South Georgia site will produce 250 megawatts of electricity, enough to power nearly 50,000 homes.  However most of the electricity generated by the Desoto Solar Farm project, featuring some 500,000 solar panels in its first phase alone, will go towards powering a new Facebook data operations center.  The project will also employ more than 400 workers through construction and installation.  But it may not be Georgia’s biggest solar farm for long – Georgia Power and other energy providers are working on projects that will match, or eclipse, Lee County’s operation in the next several years.
