The final chunk of the wreck of the Golden Ray was finally removed in late October, wrapping up an operation that Cmdr. Efren Lopez of the U.S. Coast Guard called “the largest wreck removal in U.S. history.”  The South Korean freighter, carrying more than 4,200 automobiles, first capsized in September of 2019 off the coast of St. Simons in southeast Georgia.  An arduous removal process ensued, delayed several times due to storms, oil leaks, and even a fire caused by welding torches, winding up taking more than 3 million man hours and all manner of giant cranes and barges to cut up and haul off pieces of the massive container ship.  There is still some final cleanup work to be done, but one of the wildest sagas in coastal Georgia history is at its end.
