Monday morning, as legislators reported for the opening day of the 2022 session of the Georgia General Assembly, GA2A released its policy priorities for the legislative session. GA2A was formerly known as GeorgiaCarry.org, but changed its name earlier this month.
“While the name has changed, the organization’s leadership, mission and commitment to safeguarding the 2nd Amendment Rights of law-abiding Georgians remains the same,” said Jerry Henry, Executive Director of GA2A. “This new name adequately reflects the wide scope of issues that we care about as an organization and re-affirms our commitment to protecting the 2nd Amendment Rights of all law-abiding Georgians.”
GA2A’s agenda – “Shield the 2nd” – is a series of legislative proposals Henry says will ease access to Georgia Weapons Licenses (GWL) for law-abiding citizens, clarify language in “Campus Carry” bill, empower the enforcement of gun auctions laws and stop government from restricting the legal purchase of firearms during an emergency.
According to Henry, GA2A will support “permitless carry” and boldly fight any legislation introduced during the session that infringes on the 2nd Amendment rights of Georgians.
“Crime is out of control in communities throughout Georgia and GA2A is leading the fight to safeguard our constitutional rights so law-abiding Georgians can keep their families safe,” said Henry.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced last week that he will push legislation that would loosen requirements to carry a handgun in public.
“Building a safer, stronger Georgia starts with hardworking Georgians having the ability to protect themselves and their families,” said Kemp. “In the face of rising violent crime across the country, law-abiding citizens should have their constitutional rights protected.”
His announcement was followed by Tweets from former U.S. Senator David Perdue, who is challenging Kemp in the Republican Primary for Governor. “I’m glad Brian Kemp is answering my call for constitutional carry in Georgia. But real leaders lead from the start – and it’s time Georgia had a Governor who shows principled leadership when it matters most.”
GA2A has led the fight to protect gun rights in Georgia for over a decade.
“From championing laws to ease the burdens of a Georgia Carry License to ensuring that teachers and students can protect themselves on public college campuses, we have an unmatched track record of accomplishments at the state level,” said Henry. “As GA2A, we will build on that momentum to ensure that the constitutional rights afforded to citizens of this great state are never infringed.”
