The Army Corps of Engineers made a surprising discovery while finishing up the Port of Savannah deepening project – 19 cannons once belonging to British warships dating back to the Revolutionary War.  When the engineers found the first cannon while dredging the port earlier this year, they called in a team of divers and archaeologists to see what else they could find.  What turned up was another 18 cannons which historians believe came from the HMS Savannah, sunk in 1779 by the British themselves in an effort to slow the approaching French Army, which along with American forces were attempting to wrest Savannah back from British control.  What’s next for the cannons?  Interested parties include both the U.S. Federal and British governments, as well as the state of Georgia and local historical groups, of which Savannah has many.  Hopefully once restored they will be on display somewhere in the Savannah area for interested observers.
