Democrat Rep. Lucy McBath is now running to represent metro Atlanta’s 7th U.S. Congressional District and, for the November election, she will face the winner of the June 21st Republican runoff between Mark Gonsalves and Michael Corbin. The two are locked in a slugfest but Gonsalves just received a helpful endorsement from former longtime Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway.

Mark Gonsalves
Conway, who reportedly plans to do robo calls on behalf of Gonsalves, says he especially appreciates his pro-enforcement views on illegal aliens and his opposition to amnesty for illegals. The veteran lawman says his support is largely based on Gonsalves’ pro-enforcement outlook on illegal immigration, and attacks Corbin as being too soft on the issue.
Corbin, who has worked as a sales manager, is on the defensive after controversial remarks he made to a Fulton County GOP breakfast that he supported amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants. Gonsalves has been hitting him on the issue, especially since Georgia (according to the Department of Homeland Security) has more illegal immigrants than even the border state of Arizona.
Michael Corbin
Corbin says his GOP breakfast remarks have been taken out of context, but InsiderAdvantage has talked with some upset attendees who said it was pretty clear he was for amnesty and a path to legalization for illegal immigrants. Corbin has also been hitting back at Gonsalves for being a “RINO” – “Republican in Name Only.” That’s a popular attack line being bandied about in many Republican races this year— and in many years past.
Corbin’s campaign platform focuses on the economy, defense, education, civil rights and Constitutional Rights. If elected he says that, during his first 100 days in office, he will publicly list all members of Congress currently serving over three years and will demand an on-the-record statement for why they do not support term limits. He also claims he will also “put a stop to inflation and quickly roll back the far left’s policies.”
Gonsalves describes himself as a “longtime resident of Georgia’s 7th District and a successful businessman.” As far as a priority of his campaign message, Gonsalves lists “honoring our freedom first heritage.” He says “Without our God-given right to freedom, little else matters. A quarter millennia ago, it was of such importance some brave men pledged to its attainment their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. We should do no less. The practical application of this is to allow Americans to run their own lives.” He also lists protecting the Constitution and stopping crime explosion as top issues.
In his business arena, Gonsalves says he has taken special assignments with a number of companies in need of new vision and leadership. He served as CEO of the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy, directed the acquisition of Nature’s Brands Inc., and re-branded an innovative UK-based nutritional supplement company.
The 7th U.S. Congressional District includes portions of the northeast Atlanta metropolitan area, including the cities of Peachtree Corners, Norcross, Cumming, Lawrenceville, Duluth, Snellville, Suwanee, and Buford. It covers most of Democrat-leaning Gwinnett County and part of GOP-friendly Forsyth County.
