For years volunteers with the St. Simons Island Sea Turtle Project have gathered to protect and document sea turtle nesting sites.  The group partners with researchers at the University of Georgia, which works with similar groups up and down the state’s coast.  So far in 2022 3,977 sea turtle nests were documented in the state, a new record, surpassing the previous one set in 2019.  Georgia’s barrier islands are a perfect sea turtle nesting spot, but nests can be easily disturbed and incubation periods cut short.  Volunteers with the SSI Sea Turtle Project and others have worked hard to gather key data points that will help scientists better protect nests and make sure they continue to flourish along Georgia’s coastline for generations to come.
