Expanding access to rural healthcare has been a key priority for legislators in recent years, but there are still areas where Georgia struggles. One of those is access to maternity care, where according to a study by March of Dimes, nearly half of the state’s 159 counties are considered ‘maternity care deserts.’ That means that some 159,000 women in Georgia live more than 30 minutes from a hospital that provides labor and delivery services.
