Augusta, Georgia, is home to one of the oldest Chinese communities in the eastern U.S., with an immigrant population arriving in 1873 by way of California to work on the Augusta Canal.  In 1920 the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association was founded, serving as a cultural base for meetings and social outreach.  Augusta would remain one of the East Coast’s largest hubs for Chinese immigrants until the 1960’s, when immigration from the Asian country was re-opened.  The Georgia Historical Society is honoring “The Augusta Chinese and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association” with a plaque memorializing their history and many contributions to Augusta, to be unveiled this Friday in front of the group’s headquarters.
