The Firefly Trail is an ongoing project to build a trail on an abandoned Georgia Railroad line from Athens down to Union Point, about 40 miles to the south.  Now partially constructed, the trail faces many of the same concerns to similar projects – funding, opposition from neighbors and road and river crossings.  But supporters are looking to expand the scope of the project, taking it from a small corner of northeast Georgia all the way down to the Georgia coast.  The Georgia Hi-Lo Trail would continue the trail from Union Point to Savannah, adding 200 miles and quite a few logistical hurdles to a plan that if completed would create the longest paved trail in the U.S.  The path would go through long stretches of rural Georgia, connecting them and providing an economic boon on a large scale not often available to towns like Swainsboro, Guyton, and Sparta, all stops on the proposed route.
