Georgia has a long and deep history with hydroelectric power.  Many lakes across the state were built by Georgia Power or other utilities for the express purpose of harnessing energy via their dams.  Now, as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, the Bartlett’s Ferry Hydroelectric Damn north of Columbus is looking to get its first upgrades in over 100 years. Georgia Power will use a $2.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to test out a Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) system, an efficiency upgrade which would allow it to more easily handle peak energy hours that strain the power grid.
