There was a whirlwind of votes in Congress last week on various issues, and Georgia’s U.S House of Representatives delegation was in the thick of it. The big policy issue that dominated the news was the House passage on late Saturday of legislation to keep major government agencies, entities and programs afloat into November (but no aid to Ukraine was included).
U.S. Rep. Austin Scott was among four Georgia Republicans who voted yes on the continuing funding resolution. The others were Reps. Rick Allen, Buddy Carter and Drew Ferguson. Voting no were Reps. Andrew Clyde, Mike Collins, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Barry Loudermilk and Rich McCormick.
“We need to vote for this continuing resolution to keep the United States government funded,” Scott said in an impassioned plea. “We need to keep the Department of Defense funded and our soldiers funded.” The Georgia Republicans who voted no said they were holding out for more spending cuts. But the clock ran out and the government was about to shut down.
Democrats, meanwhile, stalled for hours on Saturday before deciding to vote yes with a majority of Republicans. In fact, one Democrat lawmaker– Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York–is even caught on video tape pulling a fire alarm in a House office building to delay the vote.
Voting yes were five Georgia Democrats: Reps. Sanford Bishop, Hank Johnson, Lucy McBath, David Scott and Nikema Williams.
