Established in 1989, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is the premier platform for economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific, comprising 21 member economies including Taiwan. It focuses on trade, investment liberalization, business facilitation and technical cooperation, guided by principles of mutual respect and consensus. Taiwan is a dedicated contributor to APEC’s mission, consistently sending delegates to attend some 200 meetings and hosting over 20 meetings and events annually.
Aligned with APEC’s 2023 theme, “Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All,” Taiwan actively collaborates with member economies in areas such as digital innovation, green transition, food security, public health, and women’s economic empowerment. Further, Taiwan’s voluntary contributions of US$2.2 million in 2022, and US$ 1.5 million to fund APEC projects through the remainder of 2023 and 2024, underscore its active engagement.
Another shining example of Taiwan’s dedication to APEC is Dr. Morris Chang, the founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), who will represent Taiwan at the 2023 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM), which will be held in San Francisco from November 15 to 17. Dr. Chang has actively engaged in these meetings on five prior occasions, advocating for Taiwan’s ability to contribute to the region’s stability and prosperity. His presence, alongside other world leaders, enhances Taiwan’s international image and visibility.
As APEC broadens its focus to address contemporary challenges, Taiwan is poised to contribute significantly in areas such as small- and medium-sized enterprise development, ICT, food security, public health, and disaster prevention. Taiwan’s APEC involvement showcases its unwavering dedication to regional growth and the pursuit of a resilient and sustainable future for the Asia-Pacific.
