Three days after the Georgia Senate passed legislation that would authorize the State Election Board to investigate the administration of primary and election laws by the Secretary of State and local county elections officials, current Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger sent out a press release “demanding action from the Senate on SB 368, which protects our elections from foreign interference.”
SB 368, by Sen. Rick Williams, R-Milledgeville, would tighten loopholes to prevent foreign funding at the state level in elections and campaigns. It prohibits foreign sources of funding from being used to influence elections, including campaigns for public office or any ballot measure being put before Georgia voters. Additional requirements would mandate state registration of American citizens who lobby or consult on behalf of foreign governments, agencies, political parties, or organizations, according to Raffensperger.
