A little more than a week ago, members of the House Higher Education Committee heard testimony on a Senate bill that would effectively legalize online sports betting for 16 license holders in the state if approved by Georgia voters in the general election. Yesterday, those same committee members heard a proposed constitutional amendment that was passed by the Senate late last month that would pave the way for the legalized sports betting.

State Sen. Bill Cowsert, R-Athens, presented SR 579, and explained that it doesn’t currently match the enabling legislation – SB 386 by Sen. Clint Dixon, R-Gwinnett – on where to send tax revenue. But Cowsert said he felt a statewide referendum should be the preferred route for the General Assembly.
