A 2021 Department of Agriculture report revealing that China possessed 384,000 acres of American agricultural land caught the attention of Georgia lawmakers during the 2024 legislative session. The statistic reflected a 30 percent surge from 2019 to 2020, and led Sen. Jason Anavitarte, R-Dallas, to craft legislation to address this.

The result was Senate Bill 420 prohibits perilous foreign adversaries from owning agricultural land or land within a 10-mile radius of a military base, installation, or airport in Georgia. The bill passed both Chambers and is now headed to Governor Brian Kemp’s desk for his signature.
