Should Georgia’s colleges and universities remain on the semester system or go back to the quarter system? That’s the question facing a House study committee during the off-session. House Speaker Jon Burns, R-Newington, Thursday announced the creation of the House Study Committee on Assessing the Semester and Quarter Systems at USG and TCSG Institutions

Colleges and universities that are part of the University System of Georgia (USG) have operated on the semester system rather than the quarter system since 1999, and schools in the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) changed to the semester system in 2011. Lawmakers now want to know if those changes have been beneficial. Created by House Resolution 1384, the committee will examine “respective advantages and disadvantages of semesters and quarters and whether the anticipated benefits of converting to the semester system have been realized. “
