State Rep. Houston Gaines, R-Athens— a 30-year-old who has only served six years in the state House of Representatives— is not only a rising GOP star but an exceptional fundraiser. Consider that, based on a Jan. 31 campaign disclosure report for each of the eight members of the GOP House leadership, Gaines ranks an amazing second behind Speaker Jon Burns in terms of cash in his campaign account.
Burns reported having $984,251, while Gaines listed a balance of $908,344.
Ranking far behind is Majority Whip James Burchett with $309,847 and Majority Leader Chuck Efstration recording $302,701. Speaker-Pro-Tempore Jan Jones had $272,864 and Majority Caucus Chair Bruce Williamson only had $171,661.
During the last 13 months, the report also reveals that Gaines had garnered contributions of $2,000 or more from 47 entities, with 16 at more than $3,000.
When you consider that Attorney General Chris Carr has raised approximately $2.2 million in his run for the 2026 GOP gubernatorial nomination, and probable gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has over $3 million in his campaign account, Gaines’ war chest doesn’t look too shabby. He seems content for now to continue working hard in his current post representing his constituents. But state party leaders, his colleagues in the General Assembly and his wide circle of donors will be keeping an eye on Gaines should he decide to run for higher office in the years to come.
