On June 20, 1944, 2Lt. Milton Leonard Hymes, Jr. of Savannah departed from England aboard a B-24J Liberator heavy bomber for an ill-fated mission deep inside Nazi-occupied Poland. 81 years later, he’s finally made it home. Hymes’ plane crashed over the Baltic sea, and he became one of the nearly-9,000 American servicemembers listed as ‘Missing in Action’ during World War II. In 2019, the Danish Royal Navy discovered the wreckage some 60-feet below the surface, and later a nonprofit group called Project Recovery was contracted by the U.S. government to explore the crash site. Project Recovery divers positively identified the remains of three crewmembers from the flight, including Hymes, and last week his remains were finally returned to his family in Savannah to be buried at Bonaventure Cemetery. More than 200 people attended his funeral.
