Georgia has 159 counties – 143 of them have been designated as a “Health Professional Shortage Area” by the Department of Health and Human Services. Even in Fulton, Dekalb and Gwinnett, at least part of the county is a shortage area. A new bill introduced by Senator Raphael Warnock and Republican Arkansas Senator John Boozman aims to increase the number of physicians across the country by increasing the number of Medicare funded residency positions.
