It’s been a long and winding road for electric car-maker Rivian’s Morgan County factory, but today Gov. Brian Kemp will headline a group of local and state leaders on hand for the project’s groundbreaking. Fending off lawsuits from upset neighbors and delays as the company was forced to cut costs, the project finally getting started marks a major win for the state’s economic development team as the $5 billion factory is one of the largest projects in state history. The 2,000-acre manufacturing plant is expected to eventually employ 7,500 workers and will be home to production of the upcoming R2 crossover. To capitalize on the $1.5 billion in incentives forked over by the state as well as the $6.6 billion in federal grants given by then-President Joe Biden before he left office, Rivian needed to break ground and get the project started. And much to the relief of stakeholders (and chagrin of certain Morgan and Walton Co. neighbors) construction of the massive EV plant is finally getting underway.
