Debra Shigley and Jason Dickerson
The race to succeed former state Sen. Brandon Beach in his north Atlanta metro district was decided last night, with Republican Jason Dickerson staving off Democrat Debra Shigley in a battle that drew national attention. Dickerson took 61 percent of the vote to Shigley's 39 percent.
Beach, who was drafted by President Donald Trump to be U.S. treasurer, won the district with more than 70 percent of the vote in 2024, but when Shigley took first place in last month's special election (six Republicans split the rest of the vote) Democrats thought they smelled blood in the water and an opportunity to flip a precious state Senate seat. Heavy hitters like U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath, and gubernatorial candidates Geoff Duncan and Jason Esteves came out to campaign for Shigley in person, hoping a forceful get-out-the-vote push could swing an upset and make political waves that would ripple out from the north Atlanta suburbs across the country.
