South DeKalb County has lagged behind much of the Atlanta metro when it comes to growth, as the area has struggled with blight and access to groceries. But a motivated county government is taking strides to invest in the area, announcing a new development that will be anchored by a 50,000 sq. ft. Publix. The Candler Crossing shopping center will also contain commercial spaces that will be rented to local businesses at below-market rates. The Decide DeKalb Development Authority board has also awarded a $3.8 million tax incentive to the project to get its wheels rolling. “Candler Crossing is a full-circle moment for me,” said DeKalb Co. CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson. “This project will deliver fresh food, create jobs and reestablish Candler Road as a destination for the community.”
