One of Georgia’s newest Republicans is joining a crowded field running for State School Superintendent in the 2026 Mid-term elections. Former state representative Mesha Mainor left the Democratic party in 2023 after she supported, and helped pass, legislation that created vouchers for some Georgia students, and sparred with Democrats over police funding.

Today she wants to “give parents a voice” and is challenging current school chief Richard Woods – also a Republican. She is one of four announced Republican candidates.
