For 100 years the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) has helped lead the management and conservation of the 2,190 mile trail that bears its name. And with the Appalachian Trail starting (or ending, depending on your perspective) on Springer Mountain, near Ellijay, the nonprofit has deep roots in Georgia. To celebrate its centennial birthday, the organization is promoting an effort to change the definition of the saying “take a hike” to take on a more positive connotation, urging dictionaries to add the definition “a friendly invitation to reset, recharge, and reconnect with the outdoors,” as part of an effort to promote physical and mental health. Who knows if it will catch on, but regardless taking a hike on the AT here in the North Georgia mountains will have your health RISING…
