Perhaps it could be said for most states across the country but for Georgia in particular, no industry has had quite the impact of the railroad. As far as this writer is aware, no other state capital was founded somewhat on the whims of railroad surveyors like Atlanta – then known as Terminus – was in 1836. As the home of the headquarters of Norfolk Southern, the industry is still big business for the state almost 200 years later (the most recent issue of James Magazine went in depth on some of this history in a recent profile of Norfolk Southern).
