A new long-range outlook for Atlanta Public Schools reveals trouble on the horizon for one of the state’s largest school districts. Faced with declining enrollment rates and increasing costs, district officials unveiled a plan that would “repurpose” as many as 16 school buildings, including nine outright closures. Teachers and parents have voiced objections to the closures, but when the district is built out to serve 70,000 students and currently only has some 50,000 enrolled, belts need to be tightened somewhere. Atlanta Beltline light rail back on the menu?
Many Atlantans were dismayed when Mayor Andre Dickens seemingly tabled the idea of light rail along the Atlanta Beltline, the city’s wildly popular and successful pedestrian path. After all, light rail was a core part of the loop’s original vision, meant to connect the city all around its (eventual) 22-mile loop. But now the Atlanta City Council is pushing back, with 11 councilmembers, led by Atlanta City Councilwoman Kelsea Bond signing onto a resolution signaling support for the idea.
