For those who may be unaware, serving in the military can be tough on families. Besides deployments, which come with their own extreme level of anxiety, daily life back here at home can also be stressful. According to data from the Census Bureau, those that served in the military have the highest divorce rate of any career field. Another of the chief reasons is the difficulty of building a life when moving is such a common phenomenon in the military.
The infamous “military brat” who attended half a dozen schools and moved that number of times as they were growing up can be difficult for the children but for the spouse, who is trying to manage enrollments, build a support system and establish a household, moving every couple years can be devastating. A new bill from Representatives Jen Kiggans (R-VA 2) and Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (D-GA 2) aims to change that and help improve the quality of life for military families. The Stabilizing Tours to Advance Readiness (STAY) Act’s main component is the direction for the Department of Defense to review Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves and hopefully reduce them.
