A Senate study committee tasked with working with school administrators, educators, parents, policymakers, and community organizations to help Georgia develop the best solution to chronic absenteeism has unanimously adopted its final report. The Senate Study Committee on Combating Chronic Absenteeism in Schools offers 22 recommendations in the report, including the last – prohibit cellphones in high schools.
Created by Senate Resolution 217 during the 2025 Legislative Session, the committee was chaired by Sen. John F. Kennedy, R-Macon. During the past few months, members heard from school administrators, policymakers, parents and community organizers about evidence-based approaches for improving student attendance. The testimony explored ways to enhance school climate and streamline communication between faculty and families.
