Georgia Democrats pulled off a major upset Tuesday when Democrat Eric Gisler defeated Republican Mack “Dutch” Guest by the narrowest of margins in an Athens-area state House seat. It’s notable because just last year Gisler took home only 39% of the vote against then-Rep. Marcus Wiedower (who resigned this year) in what was thought to be a safely-red district. Atlanta Beltline light rail back on the menu?
Many Atlantans were dismayed when Mayor Andre Dickens seemingly tabled the idea of light rail along the Atlanta Beltline, the city’s wildly popular and successful pedestrian path. After all, light rail was a core part of the loop’s original vision, meant to connect the city all around its (eventual) 22-mile loop. But now the Atlanta City Council is pushing back, with 11 councilmembers, led by Atlanta City Councilwoman Kelsea Bond signing onto a resolution signaling support for the idea.
