On Friday the U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Fulton County in Atlanta’s U.S. District Court seeking access to voting records and ballots from the contested 2020 presidential election. It is a general election still surrounded by unanswered questions regarding lack of transparency and the county’s continued resistance to producing the ballots that by law they must retain and store.
The lawsuit finally comes after the Georgia State Election Board passed a resolution in July calling on state and federal authorities to enforce election transparency laws. According to court filings, the DOJ formally requested a sweeping set of election materials in October, including all used and void ballots, ballot stubs, absentee ballot signature envelopes, and related digital files from the 2020 election.
