At a press conference earlier this year at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and airport officials discussed the scourge of human trafficking in Georgia. Many of them are transported through the airport, nearly 400 girls are trafficked across the state every month. The average victim is between 11 and 13 years old. The state of Georgia has been working on a number of bills related to trafficking and now the federal government is working on legislation to improve coordination between agencies and improve prevention.
This week, the U.S. Senate passed the Preventing Child Trafficking Act of 2025, sponsored by Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff and Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley. The bill looks to strengthen coordination between the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
