It looks like there are going to be more special elections in Georgia. Two Democratic state representatives have resigned, leaving vacancies only days before the opening of the 2026 legislative session.
Rep. Lynn Heffner, D-Augusta, announced her resignation Monday from the Georgia House of Representatives, effective immediately because of residency issues following Hurricane Helene. And Rep. Karen Bennet, D-Stone Mountain, has announced her retirement after 13 years in office. Because of the time restrictions for the Governor to announce the date and the election to be held, these two seats will remain vacant for much of the session.
But there is a twist to one of the resignations. Monday night, a few days after Bennett’s official announcement, news broke that she has been charged with fraudulently receiving nearly $14,000 in unemployment benefits intended for people who lost their jobs because of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to news reports, a federal grand jury indicted Bennett on Monday.
