Georgia’s largest and southern-most barrier island is Cumberland Island, in Camden County. It is best known for its pristine nature and wildlife, including wild horses. Overseen by the National Park Service, only one 300-person ferry a day travels to the island, and visitors are highly limited. But a new plan to double the number of ferry seats and increase campsite capacity from 220 to 304 campers is drawing heated debate, as some conservation groups say it could spoil the island’s delicate ecosystem. Meanwhile federal officials say the plan would allow more visitors to experience the island, and of course generate additional funding to take care of the park. The plan is open for public comment through February 6th.
