Georgia politicos got a shocker Wednesday afternoon when U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk announced he will not be seeking re-election this November. The six-term Republican said he will “contribute to my community, state and nation in other ways” in a statement. His GOP-leaning district runs from Northwest Georgia down into the Atlanta suburbs, and will surely draw another crowded field as the now-fourth open congressional seat in the Peach State. Atlanta Beltline light rail back on the menu?
Many Atlantans were dismayed when Mayor Andre Dickens seemingly tabled the idea of light rail along the Atlanta Beltline, the city’s wildly popular and successful pedestrian path. After all, light rail was a core part of the loop’s original vision, meant to connect the city all around its (eventual) 22-mile loop. But now the Atlanta City Council is pushing back, with 11 councilmembers, led by Atlanta City Councilwoman Kelsea Bond signing onto a resolution signaling support for the idea.
