Last December’s announcement that Atlanta Public Schools would close or repurpose more than a dozen schools raised eyebrows, but not as many as this month’s news that DeKalb County will close over TWO dozen. It mirrors a national trend of a major decline in public school enrollment. Atlanta Beltline light rail back on the menu?
Many Atlantans were dismayed when Mayor Andre Dickens seemingly tabled the idea of light rail along the Atlanta Beltline, the city’s wildly popular and successful pedestrian path. After all, light rail was a core part of the loop’s original vision, meant to connect the city all around its (eventual) 22-mile loop. But now the Atlanta City Council is pushing back, with 11 councilmembers, led by Atlanta City Councilwoman Kelsea Bond signing onto a resolution signaling support for the idea.
