A pair of Democrats launched campaigns Tuesday to try and win seats on Georgia’s Supreme Court, and they’re packing impressive resumes. Former state Sen. Jen Jordan, who ran for attorney general in 2022, is challenging Justice Sarah Warren, while trial lawyer Miracle Rankin is running against Justice Charlie Bethel. But they’ll face an uphill battle – an incumbent Georgia Supreme Court justice hasn’t lost an election since 1922. And they’ll have to get their campaigns rolling quickly, the nonpartisan election takes place on May 19th, not in November with the rest of the midterms. Atlanta, Fulton Co. square off in tax fight
The City of Atlanta has long used tax allocation districts (TADs) as an economic development tool, leveraging property tax increases to pay for local infrastructure projects. But the Fulton County Commission has slammed on the brakes, voting 4-1 to reject a proposed 30-year extension of Atlanta’s TADs. That sets up a major budgetary clash, as the Fulton TADs would be expected to generate over a billion dollars over that period.
