Georgia legislators worked late into Friday night , with the House of Representatives even going past midnight. It was Crossover Day, which marks the deadline for legislation to pass its originating chamber and stay alive for the rest of the session. Consider major highlights:
House Bill 1116: Sponsored by Rep. Shaw Blackmon, R-Bonaire, this bill passed by a 98-68 vote. Initially, the House legislation would have eliminated homestead property taxes by 2032. That proposal failed earlier, and a scaled-back version of HB 1116 was revived and passed late Friday.
The bill caps annual property tax increases at the greater of 3 percent or the rate of inflation under the federal Consumer Price Index. HB 1116 now heads to the Senate.
A bill to repeal new sales tax subsidies for data center equipment also advanced out of the state Senate on Friday, although critics say a portion of the bill does not protect customers from rising utility costs associated with data centers’ high energy demand.
