A bill focusing on math in Georgia schools will go back to the House for final agreement after Senators gave approval to HB 1030, the “Math Matters Act.” The bill, by Rep. Sandy Donatucci, R-Buford, includes the adoption of new math standards and also incorporates language from SB 171 by Sen. Jason Anavitarte, R-Dallas, which would require the State Board of Education to develop an advanced math pathway for students in grades 3 to 8, culminating in a high school math course that students could take in middle school.
The bill sailed through the Senate by a 51-0 vote Monday. The legislation also increases required instructional time, automatically enrolling certain high-performing students in advanced math courses, and imposing new requirements for educator certification.
