The man who will (hopefully) lead Atlanta United’s turnaround is Mauricio Culebro, who this week was named president of soccer for both the MLS side as well as Arthur Blank’s future NWSL women’s team, scheduled to start play in 2028. He comes from Tigres UANL, one of the biggest soccer clubs in Mexico. Culebro will be tasked with rebuilding Atlanta United, which burst onto the scene in 2017 and won its first championship only a season later, but has floundered in recent years despite strong fan support and one of the biggest payrolls in the league. Atlanta, Fulton Co. square off in tax fight
The City of Atlanta has long used tax allocation districts (TADs) as an economic development tool, leveraging property tax increases to pay for local infrastructure projects. But the Fulton County Commission has slammed on the brakes, voting 4-1 to reject a proposed 30-year extension of Atlanta’s TADs. That sets up a major budgetary clash, as the Fulton TADs would be expected to generate over a billion dollars over that period.
