The man who will (hopefully) lead Atlanta United’s turnaround is Mauricio Culebro, who this week was named president of soccer for both the MLS side as well as Arthur Blank’s future NWSL women’s team, scheduled to start play in 2028. He comes from Tigres UANL, one of the biggest soccer clubs in Mexico. Culebro will be tasked with rebuilding Atlanta United, which burst onto the scene in 2017 and won its first championship only a season later, but has floundered in recent years despite strong fan support and one of the biggest payrolls in the league. Questions linger over Atlanta City Hall investigation
An ongoing investigation into former Atlanta Municipal Clerk Foris Webb III is hitting roadblocks, as city employees are delaying or rejecting interviews by the inspector general. Webb received more than $900,000 in consulting fees from the city for his “work” on a referendum meant to block the city’s law enforcement training center, dubbed “Cop City.” That referendum got held up in court, never wound up doing anything, and the center was built, but Webb continued to cash a $35,000 check each month.
