As we’re enjoying springtime across Georgia, the loggerhead sea turtles are also making their way to the state to enjoy the springtime – or at least one night’s worth of it anyway when they lay their eggs on Georgia beaches. A senior wildlife biologist with DNR Mark Dodd, also the sea turtle program coordinator at DNR, says its like clockwork.
The first loggerhead nests this year were reported on Tuesday at St. Catherine’s, one of a handful of privately owned barrier islands. St. Catherine’s is situated between Sapelo and Ossabaw islands, due east of the Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge. The island is also known for its population of ring-tailed lemurs, one of the only populations outside of Madagascar in the world. Daily monitoring will start of Georgia in mid-May.
