The newly reimagined Rosa Parks Square in downtown Macon was recognized by Historic Macon with the Josh M. Rogers Revitalization Award earlier this month. City officials said they wanted the park to bring people together and to actually be used by residents as a community gathering space. “This park, in its redesigned form, forces people to come together. It provides opportunities to meet each other, to protest, to amplify voices, to gather for joyful occasions, and to host concerts,” said Alex Morrison, Macon’s director of Planning and Public Spaces. The revitalization effort included a new stage, additional seating, improved lighting and a memorial wall honoring Rosa Parks’ legacy and the park’s place in the community.
