New law will consolidate Georgia transit authorities

New legislation signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp will “streamline Georgia’s transportation governance structure by dismantling the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) and reconstructing the Atlanta-region Transit Link Authority (ATL) into a single entity focused on efficiency and limited government.” HB 297 will rename the consolidated authority as the Georgia Transportation Efficiency Authority (GTEA) and streamlines more than 70 sections of state law.

According to lawmakers, the legislation also reduces the size of statutory transportation boards from 31 members to 13 members, eliminates duplicative oversight structures and modernizes operational requirements.
