Margaret Swan was sitting alone on an Atlanta MARTA train last Saturday when a maniac suddenly and repeatedly stabbed her to death as witnesses froze without reacting. Other Atlanta stabbings have occurred in recent weeks. Incredibly, all the MARTA fare gates are wide open because a new fare card system is not in place. This means anyone from the mentally ill to criminals can wander in freely. Unfortunately there aren’t enough MARTA police officers to be in all the train cars, nor enough Atlanta police near station entrances. With the FIFA World Cup arriving in two weeks and drawing massive crowds, wouldn’t it be wise for Gov. Brian Kemp to order state troopers to help guard the gates and patrol MARTA stations? Atlanta, Fulton Co. square off in tax fight
The City of Atlanta has long used tax allocation districts (TADs) as an economic development tool, leveraging property tax increases to pay for local infrastructure projects. But the Fulton County Commission has slammed on the brakes, voting 4-1 to reject a proposed 30-year extension of Atlanta’s TADs. That sets up a major budgetary clash, as the Fulton TADs would be expected to generate over a billion dollars over that period.
