For 60 years Macon Coliseum has been a landmark in Middle Georgia, hosting acts from Otis Redding and the Allman Brothers to graduations, ice hockey, and GHSA tournaments. But starting in 2028, the city is getting an upgrade, in the form of a sterling, $350 million, 10,000 seat arena that promises to be the crown jewel of the region. Macon Arena is the centerpiece of a major, $1 billion capital improvement plan that will give the city a makeover, a nod to its thriving business and social culture it’s developed over the past decade. In addition to the arena, there are plans for new hotels, a convention center, and a Mercer University medical school complex. All that on top of the recently opened, 12,000 seat Macon Amphitheatre, the Otis Redding Center for the Arts downtown, and the historic Macon City Auditorium, currently under renovation. Good time to work in construction in Macon – or to live there in general!
