Georgia’s newest congressman is pushing a constitutional amendment to end automatic citizenship for children born in the United States to illegal immigrants. U.S. Rep. Clay Fuller, R-GA, is bringing attention to House Joint Resolution 172 which he filed on May 4. His response comes after the recent Supreme Court ruling to uphold birthright citizenship and strike down President Donald Trump’s executive order on the issue.
“Citizenship in this country is the most valuable thing we have to give. It is not a prize for breaking our laws to get here. As a prosecutor, I saw the price that having an open border has forced on Northwest Georgia families, and I will keep fighting to protect American citizenship. The Supreme Court has refused to stop this invasion, so Congress must act. We owe it to our children and all future generations of Americans to NOT become Europe,” said Fuller.

According to reports, a divided Supreme Court rejected Trump’s executive order declaring that children born to people who are in the United States illegally or temporarily are not American citizens, striking down the President’s order by a 6-3 vote. A majority of five justices, in an opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts, ruled that the president cannot redefine birthright citizenship, and all children who are born in the United States, whether their parents are in the country legally or not, satisfy citizenship requirements in the 14th amendment.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh disagreed about the constitutional ruling but pointed to a federal law that he said broadly conveys birthright citizenship.
Fuller’s resolution would require anyone born in the United States to have at least one citizen or legal resident parent to earn citizenship. Anyone born in the United States to two illegal parents would not be a citizen.
