Burke County Sheriff Alfonzo Williams has been stripped of his arrest powers after the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) suspended his law enforcement certification. This action came after a federal grand jury indicted him on charges of extortion (he’s accused of receiving cash for dismissing DUI charges) and giving a Glock pistol to a convicted felon. The POST suspension still keeps Williams in office for now, but Gov. Brian Kemp can remove a sheriff while criminal charges are pending. Atlanta Beltline light rail back on the menu?
Many Atlantans were dismayed when Mayor Andre Dickens seemingly tabled the idea of light rail along the Atlanta Beltline, the city’s wildly popular and successful pedestrian path. After all, light rail was a core part of the loop’s original vision, meant to connect the city all around its (eventual) 22-mile loop. But now the Atlanta City Council is pushing back, with 11 councilmembers, led by Atlanta City Councilwoman Kelsea Bond signing onto a resolution signaling support for the idea.
