Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tyler Harper announced this week that six projects have been tentatively selected in the first year of funding through the Georgia Farmland Conservation Fund. Joined by the Georgia Farmland Conservation Council (GFCC), Harper noted that each project is in a different county, located across the state, preserving approximately 1,000 acres of farmland. There are still some “i”s to be dotted and “t”s to be crossed before the final approval but advocates for the program indicate that the inaugural year for the program has been a success.
“We created the Georgia Farmland Conservation Fund to help Georgia farmers permanently protect their land from development, and I’m incredibly proud to see that dream become a reality,” said Commissioner Harper. “Farmland in our state is under constant threat, and I look forward to working with the General Assembly to meaningfully increase funding for this critical program to strengthen Georgia’s #1 industry. We are looking forward to sharing more information about this year’s awards upon completion of the due diligence process.”
