For more than 45 years, Georgians enjoyed spending time at the Pine Log Wildlife Management area in Bartow County. In 2023, after a rezoning by the Bartow County Commission, the Neel family business the Aubrey Corporation chose to let the lease expire and concepts ranging from mining operations to residential housing were floated as part of the future for the land. Four years on and the state is acquiring a large section of the property and will be re-opening the former WMA as the Neel Family - Pine Log Wildlife Management Area.
Comprised of more than 14,600 acres in Bartow and Cherokee counties, the property is the largest contiguous tract of private forest in north Georgia. With over 30 species and habitats that are part of the state’s Wildlife Action Plan, the acquisition by the state is a big win for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
