Suspicious Bill
Most observers expect Gov. Nathan Deal to sign the recently passed legislation that would allow state caseworkers to require a drug test of any food stamp recipient considered to have a ‘suspicious’ demeanor. While we laud the intent of this bill, we reluctantly agree with the civil libertarians who argue that the law is worded too hazily to give such broad powers to state government employees. Maybe the law will do its intended good; that is, if a court doesn’t strike it down, as a court did with a similar law in Florida. Then again, this is a tricky law that, at best, will be difficult to fairly implement. DRIFTING
